8008 (NO WEAVE)

8008 begins summerwinds 09 with fashionably delayed, distorted and done guitar in what was asimilar to hendrix performing star spangled banner. Second check box checked when he puts down the guitar after 10 or so minutes to play a saxophone in the very same way. Bit overblown I guess.. PS. For the first couple of acts I wasn't aware my iriver had any battery power at all, so there were no recordings of the first couple of acts. Fifteen minutes.

THIS PARTY SUCKS (ACCURATE EQUATION)

This Party Sucks consists of two ex Queenslanders sharing guitar/drum/vocal duties, lending each others musical strengths unto one accurate depiction of what it would be like if one combined Gutters and Nite School. The set starts with Hannah on guitar/vocals, with Andrea drumming. So familiar territory given their backgrounds. Songs were pretty basic, limited to blocky bar-the-same-fret power chords, drums the usual 4/4 beat. Vocals good though. Fun. Ten Minutes.

MATTHEW BROWN (SOARING SYNTH SOUNDSCAPE)

Laying pensive on the ground stretched over a bulky Synth, Matthew Brown's set starts with harmonising chords creating a moody atmosphere. Sparse notes devour the chords, in a precise manner. Called a Synth master by peers, Matthew's performance is driven and seemingly planned - which unlike most Synth based performances has a direction which lends it to being interesting, well thought out and controlled. Eighteen minutes.

Three piece guitar/drum/bass band Arts and Craft's instrumental set reflected older more tradititonal styles of 'rock n roll'. Some interesting 'riffs' reminscent of Brisbane's old favourites Turnpike. Bouncy bass lines, strong drums and scratchy guitar sounds - enjoyable, albeit self indulgent. Eighteen minutes.

No News are from sydney, are an acoustic guitar, low nonchalant vocals and the barest percussion. They open with what is announced as a wasted sperm cover, being summerwinds.
No News were really likable, they only played three songs but it was really good. Eight minutes.

Acid Casualty are Mai, Lei and Hannah. Much like this party sucks, Hannah makes a swap with Lei halfway through, only this time theres a more distinct change in style, given their differing guitar styles. They play four songs, with Lei fronting the band for the first two and Hannah the second two. The first two are pretty reminscent of me mu, but more straight forward with basic drums. Mai's basslines bounce around the songs playfully, giving the songs an extra level of interest where the bass would usually sit in the background for any other band. Hannah's vocals for the second half were right good. Check it outtttt. First song was really catchy. Ten minutes.

SUPER STAR (LOOPY PEDALLED NOTES)

Featuring looped guitar and various keyboard/synths - Super Star's set has a jaunty feel to it, the high short plucky guitar brings a new fresh, interesting face to the normally lacking guitar loop bands. The synth is placed in the background, used as a foundation. The lowfi, buzzing tones gives Super Star the light and shade contrast. Conjured up images of the Willy Wonka boat ride. Twenty Minutes.

We missed this set BUT we did catch him some days prior doing a set with Ben Andrews. Set was brutal, Mark addresses audience with a piece taken from a corporate guidebook or something to that effect, in a confronting manner through waves of aggressive effects. Power electronics aswell, yes. Best part was when they stopped at the same time.

Two piece, Sean Bailey (Lakes) swapping between bass, guitar and vocals. Harriet Morgan (Downtown, Zond) on drums, keeps a steady flow within the sound - doing some impressive "rolls". Punky, distorted bass/guitar through power chords. Sean wails through the set, with his typical baritone baby vocals. It was alright. Twenty minutes.

Pathetic Human are a typical hardcore band. The crowd seemed to enjoy themselves watching their high energy performance. Lead singer Tommy Gunn throws himself at the audience occasionally, even making a karate kick mid air. Ten minutes.

Shaun and Ben's "synth punk" band, features Shaun on synth, vocals and Ben on ( ? ). Shaun is a hype-man, pulling "smooth moves" with a smug look on his face - over the incredibly loud, drowning and swooning music. The set is reminiscent of the Prodigy at the Big Day Out, only 100 times lazier and not as many fans. Shaun's persona as the charismatic music maker is entertaining but not as entertaining as Ben's involvement in the band.  Thirty minutes.

The spectacle of the band was more memorable than the music. Music was looped differing electronic instruments. Another interesting performance from Tara and Rex. Rex's beats aren't as solid as usual but he totally makes up for it with enthusiasm. Tara's guitar and vocals are grating with melodic undertones. Referring to their inebriation and addressing the audience as a group of friends, Tara gets fed up with their lack of togetherness and throws her guitar down, storming off. Thus ending Summer Winds 09'. Sixteen minutes.

HEART FLEW LIKE AN ARROW (PUB FIGHT)

Heartflew tonight were represented by Adam Rogers (I would go as far to say he embodies heartflew), Ryan Potter and Andrew Mclellan. So all as usual save the only sturdy female member, Mac. So tonight was akin to a night out without the girls, a boy's club if you will. Usually around the tail end of the set, Adam gets really frustrated and aggressive, tonight the axis is reversed almost. Faced with equiptment failure in doses, Adam tosses his guitar aside and leaves the stage. Bree of Loomer stops him, and he gets back to the stage, where Bree swaps Adam's faulty keyboard with her own. Only still, the momentum of the set before this is dashed with an uneasy feeling of whether the set should have continued. Otherwise pretty exciting. Eighteen minutes.

LOOMER (HEAT AFFECTED ALTERNA BAND)

Open with one of two new songs, songs of which sound more mature than of heard before. First one plods only with a krautrocky-organicness. New bassist Pat adds moreso to the melodic side of their sound with an octave thing there und there. Second new song sounded a bit like Deerhunter. Bree's vocals were a little lazy during the first half, but the rest was good. She let loose and moved around ETC. Harry passed out at the end. Twenty minutes.

He begins his set with the proclamation that his tonight is part musically sampled from popular band Animal Collective. Sample itself is further distorted when at Rohan's disposal. The 16-17 year olds gathered stay and leave in pairs, thoughround the tail end of the set they embrace Kitten Party, for a short time.One heard saying 'Oh don't stop now, I just got used to your noise'. Blank Realm + Mani Neumeirer (I hope I spelled that right...)

I found this combination thrilling to begin with, however I felt that communication between the members was limited, probably due to the small stage at Ric's. The overall performance was good though, Luke's guitar interacting with Mani's drums a highlight. The recording did not turn out well because of the volume, however I will upload when I am able to use someone else's bandwidth.

The performance slowly starts to break down, with the New Years VIBE intoxicating to all members. Described by one (BEN XYSTER, CHEERS) as a stray dog attached to a tight leash, the set was not the tightest but possibly the most entertaining Kitchen's Floor set EVA. I liked it. The set continues with stand out songs like; Sparkles , which seems extended as the crowd moves to the tribal drumming. Deadshits brings the performance to a close with the audience singing along loudly. A very happy performance enjoyed with friends. Twenty one minutes.

Artist Jack Pemble had an exhibition schedualed to night, asked Matt Kennedy to play a set at it. Kitchens Floor drummer Julia Norris was in east timor around time, so Matt called in band Marl Karx to back him in what would be the very first electric Kitchens Floor three piece show. The month prior, we spent maybe 3 days of said month rehearsing, then on the night playing with different amps.

Unique Oil Free Air is a solo project of one Adam. He starts his set in the corner of the car park as it's where the power point is situated. Some purple flowers have been scattered around said area, floating in puddles left by the weather that's gone and wet today. Adam's music is fed through a belt of pedals before him and out through a tiny practice amp. As he activate more pedals, the sounds become mor dense and demented. It's not long though before a man working inside the building we are leeching power from comes out and kindly asks he stop. Only around five people witness his set. Four minutes.

As we've been asked to leave, Rohan (Magical Kitten) leads us over to another corner of the carpark, to a chainlink fence where trains often pass. Before this change in location, Rohan was planning to do a screamy delay pedal set, but we were now without electricity. So, he did an acoustic set on the fly. He sits at the bottom of the chain link fence and scatters his stuff around him. A now modest audience of around 7-8 stand around. Rohan starts his set by blowing through the top of a recorder, playing some shrieking high notes, before going into a state of visible panic, thrashing at the borrowed cymbals around him, among lot's of other things. The tribal nature of his music works really well with the industrial nature of our surroundings, trains passing, barbed wire. Really good, recording turned out really well also. Three minutes.

AUCHENFLOWER RED LIGHT DISTRICT (POST INDUSTRIAL MINIMALISM)

ARLD is another one of Jamie Hume's projects. I've seen him do an ARLD set before, only that time he was in a relatively stable enviroment (The Forest cafe space). For tonight's set, we are on private property, and have already provoked those who inhabit buildings around us. So Jamie's percussive set of beat ignorant cymbal crashing is ultimately more exciting. He tosses the broken cymbals around haphazardly, even with a certain flair for the disregard to to space around him. He ends his set when the cymbals are thrown over the chainlink fence I referred to earlier. Rohan scales the barbed wire and retrieves them. Two minutes.

Rohan screams into a microphone with delay pedals and all sorts, while Jamie throws his cymbals around. Then the same guy from before comes out of the building again, this time turning off the power himself. Rohan's delay effects are stripped from him midscream. Thirty seconds.

Tonight's set was essentially the same agenda as the michelton show, only differing slightly, with perhaps the enviroment to credit. For reasons I think being that two bands tonight under different or slightly altered names played a show the night before together at rics, the masking instead of subtracting bar revenue from a bar venue + bands left it on the shoulders and pulling power of name's original. The first band in question being musical pairing of brisband vets Ian Rogers and Alex Gillies AKA No Anchor. Their set as Black Birches began with Alex manning the drumkit as per usual, Ian on the floor nearby using a laptop, noise purposes. A slow build up eventually saw Ian pick up his bass guitar essentially turning what could have very nearly passed off as a new act (sic) entirely (laptop 'n drum duo Black Birches) into a No Anchor set, complete with solid block bass and powerrrrr. Down and up and down. Fourteen minutes.

AMAZING. Set was like, A LESSON. TOTALLY captivating, recording turned out really well. Yusuke plays guitar like he has completely ignored any sort of formal guitar training, unless it was training of this school in which case KUDOS because FUCKING GOOD! Nik rolls around his towelled down kit as if mentally falling down a set of very percussive stairs IE. REALLY GOOD. NOT ENOUGH CAN BE SAID BUT HERE I AM PS DOWNLOAD THIS. Eleven minutes.

To further fit with tonight's curated lineup and theme(s) (that being doom/kraut rock), Secret Birds play tonight as an organic, solid, repetitive kraut rock band. Performing with D.black on guitar (as per usual) were a bassist, another guitarist, a drummer and Tom Hall himself operating something electrical, a keyboard perhaps. Droned on a bit, but that's the nature of der genre. Heil!. Twenty minutes.

Second band under circumstances altering their name. Band of course is actually Spartak, but to be fair have another member present during set tonight. Spartak approach the guitar/drum band in a fresh way where musically the guitar lays a bed of soft, synthy passages where the drummer will spasm over his kit-over the top of guitar bed lain down. So the drums are essentially the centerpiece, and rightfully so!. Drummer utilizes his surroundings (read, a ceiling beam) to get more percussion out of his role. That is, when he's not using every space possible on the kit he sits at. Really cool. The extra member didn't really have any audible contributions to their set, though maybe that was due to him setting up very far away from Spartak themselves. Seventeen minutes.

BLACK VITAMINS (AUDIOPOLLEN ALL STARS)

This so called "super group" features all the members of Blank Realm plus Joel Stern and the guitarist from Tad Guru Band. The set features two guitarists, mini trumpet (?), keyboards, drums and bass. The set starts with a funky dance beat and structured interesting bass which connects well with the guitar. The undertones of droning piano and guitar from the Tad Guru member contrasts well with the "dancey" music and gives it another interesting layer. Finally, the high pitched trumpet "solos" from Joel Stern bring the music to a more improvised 'Audiopollen' feel. Sarah's vocals sound like a mediation and create a STERN background noise. The set is enjoyed by the audience and various audience members dance along. All over it contrasts well with the overall dancey feel of the bands at Audiopollen tonight. Eighteen minutes.

Max starts off his set as only he can using the immediate/live element of his set up, his guitar. Each of his songs start in a gentle manner, and for the most part stay true to the delicate nature of the 'emotion dwelt on, mostly staying within chord structures. Set comes in three movements of around 10 minutes each. During the final of the three, Max loops some percussive strumming of dead notes to great effect. It is within my knowledge that that was in fact, improvised. Twenty Eight Minutes.

Please Deface This Artwork are two men with guitars, pedals and time. They play music in the same sort of vein as previous act Piers, only less structured. That's not to say there is any shortage in structure though. One of the two keep the set focused with a perpetual rhythm guitar, usually playing slow passages ETC for the other to tool around with his collection of pedals, which not only filled the small space on the floor in front of him, but a shelf on his right.
The two guitars are usually on the same level, which is a bit of a let down given the range of pedals which could be making a hellish noise-storm given the chance. The better moments of this marathon session were those where it was possible to hear the effects in well, effect. Thirty Eight minutes.

Ryan Potter fronts Nikko, tonight he played a solo set of what I think were Nikko songs? Though I'm not too sure. Adam (Heartflew) contributes to an extent. Ryan plays his guitar and voice. The recording cuts off near the end. Seventeen Minutes.

A high pitched squeal of amp noise is fashioned into an intro to the set, immediately alluring. Andrew moans over the top in a high falsetto, to an eerie effect. That caves into the running theme of Andrew's sets, low frequency bass drone churning out of his expensive stack amp deal. Andrew stands solemn, alone with drone for a stretch, until a two note vehicle driven by pure angst and indifference to existence snaps the audience to attention. Caves back into drone, and the set fades away in that nature, but not before his primal scream is reverberated through the pickups of his strat copy, becomes one with the floor. Eighteen minutes.
